VPN’s: What Are They and Why Should You Use One
What it is a VPN, why should you use one and how do you install it?
All questions that we’ll help you answer in this post.
If you care about your privacy while surfing the web, or you’re a globetrotter, or you want to bypass country restrictions to enjoy your favourite media, you’ve arrived at the right place.
We know how crucial it is to have your privacy protected; thus we are going to try our best to explain to you all the ins and outs of VPN’s. Moreover, we are going to guide you through all the types of installation process.
First things first…
What is a VPN?
A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is a secure bridge between two or more IoT (Internet of Things) devices or between your device and the world wide web. Virtual Private Networks are used to protect you, while surfing the web, from snooping, interference, and censorship.
Just imagine you build a reinforced tunnel on top of the channel which your data uses to communicate with the internet. VPN’s are designed in such a way that not even your internet service provider can detect what content you’re browsing.
Why should you immediately start using a VPN?
Well… besides the obvious, using a VPN can block hackers’ attacks, and it can stop third parties from snooping on your online activity. It makes the internet what it should be. Using a VPN, you can browse the web anonymously from any public internet access point safely.
Another crucial aspect of using a VPN is that your IP address and location are masked, and therefore it is harder for third-party sites and services to charge different prices or display targeted advertising based on your location.

Now onto our favourite VPN services:
1. Express VPN
The most trusted offshore VPN for privacy and unblocking.
Long recognised as one of the world’s top VPN providers, with fast speeds and reliable customer support, ExpressVPN makes it to the top of our list as our favourite VPN service.
It tops our list for the best service out there due to its 148 servers in 94 countries and the advantage of having a significant number of clients.
No matter what platform you are using, ExpressVPN has a native client, with clients for Mac, Windows and Linux, as well as on iOS, Android, and even BlackBerry. ExpressVPN also offers routers with integrated custom firmware and VPN browser extensions, making it an all-around excellent service.
The only downside of ExpressVPN is that it can only support three connections at once, and it’s a bit pricey compared to its rivals. However, if you are not satisfied with the service they provide they offer a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Great for P2P and torrenting.
With more than 40,000 shared IPs, roughly a thousand VPN servers in 60 countries, limitless P2P traffic, IPVanish claims to offer “the world’s fastest VPN”. Compared to ExpressVPN’s 3, IPVanish allows you to have up to five connections.
IPVanish is a great option to consider if money is not a problem for you. It makes a serious contender with plenty of locations to choose from, a decent client and fast speeds.
It doesn’t come cheap, but it does what you pay for, and they also a seven-day money back guarantee.
Security is its middle name.
What makes it stand out from the rest? It’s the fact that it takes advantage of a significant number of servers (5,000+ to be precise), spread in more than 60 locations around the world. It allows you to connect up to six devices at once and offers the data benefits of a 2048-bit encryption. Features like DNS leak protection, killswitch, dedicated IP address and being able to pay with cryptocurrency are also worth mentioning.
When it comes to one of the most critical aspects, performance, NordVPN nails it with flying colours. The speeds for short connections are admirable, and long-term connections are secure. Even though it offers “no logs policy”, its stance on session logging is debatable.
Easiest to use VPN.
The Canadian-based company doesn’t drown you in jargon. There are no mentions of protocols or encryption types, and technical terms are very rare. Rather than confusing you with various terms, this platform aims to help you understand why you should opt for their services.
TunnelBear has servers in 20 countries spread all over the world.
Setup is a piece of cake. It offers clients for Android, Mac, PC and iOS, plus a browser extension. It also allows you to connect up to five devices simultaneously.
While the standard free account restricts you to a limited 500MB of traffic a month, TunnelBear’s ‘Special’ plan offers a far more generous 5GB.
If you need more, upgrading to a paid plan gets you unlimited data starting at a reasonable $5 (£4) a month, paid yearly.
